At the First Sign of Light
16” × 16” | Mixed Media on Canvas

Inspired by Andrew McMahon’s song “Ohio,” At the First Sign of Light reflects the quiet hope that can accompany leaving one chapter behind and stepping into another. Borrowing its title from the song’s opening lyric, the painting explores that suspended moment just before a new beginning—when the road ahead is unknown, but the first light of day makes forward motion feel possible.

Layers of blue-green, blush, ochre, and warm earth tones emerge through translucent veils of paint, creating a landscape shaped more by memory than geography. Delicate graphite lines drift across the surface like well-worn maps, state lines, or roads remembered long after the journey has ended.

While inspired by the imagery of a cross-country drive west, the painting is less about a destination than the emotions that travel with us: hope, uncertainty, nostalgia, and the quiet resolve to believe that what lies ahead might be brighter than what was left behind.

Rather than depicting a specific place, At the First Sign of Light invites viewers to reflect on the moments that have redirected their own lives—the departures, detours, and fresh starts that continue to shape who they become.
